Jordan's TikTok ban: a year later and still in effect
Around a year ago, Jordan implemented a ban on TikTok due to concerns over users sharing fabricated videos that propagated false news and violence.
In an exclusive statement to Roya earlier this year, a TikTok spokesperson emphasized the platform's commitment to enhancing safety measures and tools. The spokesperson highlighted the positive influence of the Jordanian TikTok community, citing its contributions to creativity in fields like science, education, and sports.
Reaffirming TikTok's stance on enforcing community guidelines, the spokesperson reiterated the platform's dedication to taking necessary actions against content that violates their policies. They also emphasized their ongoing efforts to maintain a secure and positive environment for their global community.
Abd al-Hadi al-Tahat, the head of the Cybercrime Unit at the Public Security Directorate, later confirmed that TikTok's ban in Jordan would persist unless the platform fully complies with local regulations and laws.
During the ban, many social media users turned to Virtual Private Networks (VPNs) to access TikTok. Some expressed a lack of interest in lifting the official suspension, as VPN applications allowed them to watch and share TikTok videos despite the ban.
