Palestinian Journalist, Yara Jamal, who worked as a production assistant and web writer at CTV Television Network has been terminated from her post with “no warning” per her statement.

“CTV News fired me after speaking up for Palestine, and as disappointed as I am, I’m not shocked,”

Yara Jamal organized a rally in support for Palestine, in the rally, she was asked “if Jewish people can exist in Palestine,” to which she replied with “Yes, Jews can exist, the Zionist ideology and the state of Israel cannot,” she stated in a video, adding that she did not associate herself in any form with CTV either online or in the interview.

A thread on published on “X”, formerly known as “Twitter”, accused her of being anti-semitic, to which CTV News responded one day later by putting her on a four-week paid leave and then fire three hours later.

Jamal met with representatives of Bell company, the parent company of CTV News, in a meeting that lasted only four minutes, in which she inquired about her dismissal, the Bell Media representative refused to elaborate why.

Jamal said she previously experienced incidents of racism multiple times during her spell there, to which her manager responded by asking her to ignore them.

Canadian newspaper Daily Hive asked Bell Media and CTV News to respond to Jamal’s claims and to specify which “collective agreement” she violated in an email, they responded by saying they couldn’t comment on specific staffing matters but “are committed to maintaining a respectful and inclusive work environment.”

Jamal criticized CTV News for not using the word “genocide” and instead describing the Israeli Occupation’s aggression against Gaza as a “conflict.”

“Freedom of speech does not exist for people like me, [or Palestinians]” Jamal concluded her video. “CTV has failed me as a Palestinian employee and continues to fail the Palestinian community as a whole.”
