Russian President Vladimir Putin warns that the expected ground offensive by Israeli forces will cause unacceptable civilian casualties, and that his country is ready to help mediate.

"We hear that (Israel) is preparing a ground operation in Gaza. We understand, speaking in semi-professional terms, that it is difficult to use heavy equipment in residential areas. It will have serious consequences for all parties."

"And (operating) without equipment means that it is even more difficult to perform the same operations," he continued.

"And most importantly, civilian casualties will be absolutely unacceptable. There are almost two million people living there," he added.

Putin said: "The most important thing now is to stop the bloodshed. Collective efforts to bring about a rapid ceasefire and stabilize the situation on the ground are more than needed."
