Starting next year, US passport holders visiting Europe for stays of up to 90 days will need to apply for the European Travel Information and Authorisation System (ETIAS).

The system aims to enhance security and better track travelers entering and leaving the EU.

Unlike a visa, ETIAS can be easily obtained online in a few minutes at a cost of EUR 7.

It will be valid for three years and linked to the traveler's passport.

Travelers are advised to apply at least 96 hours before departure, but the impact on US travelers' experiences in Europe is expected to be minimal.
