In June, the Council of Ministers approved a draft law amending the Traffic Law for the year 2023 AD.

The most prominent amendments are:

- Those who use the phone while driving will face a fine of JD 50 instead of JD 15.

- Crossing a red light can lead to imprisonment for one to two months, along with a fine of JD 200-300. If the offense is repeated within the same year, the penalty will be doubled.

- Drivers of public vehicles will face a fine of JD 10 if they smoke while driving, and the same penalty applies if they allow passengers to smoke.

- Driving at a speed exceeding (50) km/h above the speed limit now carries a penalty of imprisonment for one to three months and a fine of JD 100. If the violation is repeated within the same year, the fine will be doubled.

- Vehicle processions during celebrations will now be subject to fines ranging from JD 50 to JD 100.

- The draft law grants Public Security personnel the authority to conduct alcohol and drug tests when drivers are apprehended.

- Authorities can suspend a license in cases involving false documents or data, intentional accidents caused by negligence resulting in death or disability, driving under the influence of drugs, and serious violations such as driving without a license. Additionally, they can also refuse to issue driving licenses for severe infractions.

- As per the draft law, the court is restricted from revoking personal rights for driving offenses committed under the influence of drugs, alcohol, driving without a license, or driving with an unsuitable license for the vehicle. Furthermore, if the court opts to substitute imprisonment with a fine, the fine must meet the specified minimum amount or exceed the upper limit, while also adhering to the minimum limit in cases of mitigating circumstances and refraining from imposing financial penalties.
