Brazil records eight rape cases per hour in 2022
Brazilian authorities have reported an increase in rape cases during the past year 2022, reaching a record level of over 8 cases every hour, according to a human rights organization.
The Brazilian Forum for Public Security revealed that 74,930 rape cases were officially reported in the country, which is home to approximately 200 million people. This marked an 8.2 percent increase compared to the previous year.
The organization also highlighted the likelihood of many unreported rape cases, suggesting that the actual situation could be even worse than the available data indicates.
In addition to the alarming rise in rape incidents, the report also pointed out an increase in cases of violence against women. There were 1,437 reported cases of women being killed in 2022, representing a 6.1 percent increase from the previous year. Furthermore, there were 245,713 reported cases of domestic violence, reflecting a 2.9 percent increase.
