German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said Friday he plans to speak to Russian President Vladimir Putin "in due course," and resume contact after almost a breakdown in relations since the military operation.

"My last telephone call was some time ago," Scholz told the Koelner Stadt-Anzeiger newspaper.

"But I plan to speak to Putin again in due course."

The previous interaction between the two leaders occurred via telephone in early December.
