A police officer was injured Monday during a security campaign on illegal groundwater drilling in Irbid, as a number of people started a riot to obstruct the work of the police, according to the Public Security Directorate's spokesperson.

The spokesperson added that the officer was taken to hospital and is undergoing treatment.

He added that the riots were dealt with, and 16 people who participated in them were arrested, and they will be referred to the judiciary.

He pointed out that representatives from the Ministry of Water and Irrigation were also present and all unlicensed wells were filled.
