A Member of the Board of Directors of the Amman Chamber of Commerce (ACC), Asaad Al-Qawasmi, said that there has been a huge increase in online shopping for footwear and clothing in Jordan.

Qawasmi told Roya that the reason behind this boom is the coronavirus pandemic, which pushed consumers towards testing new ways of buying products from many different sectors, not just clothing.

He said that online shopping has led to unfair competition between online retailers and “traditional" local merchants, because online business owners were not subject to the same taxes or operating costs that were imposed on local store owners.

Qawasmi called on the government to reduce the sales tax on clothing and reorganize the market “properly,” especially since the clothing sector employs thousands of citizens.
