The Commissioner of Tourism and Environment at the Aqaba Special Economic Zone Authority (ASEZA), Nidal Majali, said Friday that the city of Aqaba received approximately two million visitors over the past year.

He added that the sea-side city has recorded around one million hotel reservations.

Majali noted that they are cooperating with the Aqaba Chamber of Commerce and members of the private sector to improve tourism in the Aqaba by launching the “Al-Dafa Janoubi” carnival, which directly translates to “Southern Warmth.”

He explained that the carnival is part of a bigger project, which will last for a little over 18 months, that aims to boost tourism in the area.

The aim is to make Aqaba a destination that includes shopping, entertainment and adventure, according to Petra News.

Majali pointed out that Aqaba’s weather attracts tourists year round and the tourism authority has activities planned according to the different seasons, in order to improve the local economy and tourism.

He said that Aqaba is the gateway of the Golden Triangle, through King Hussein International Airport, which makes it a popular tourist destination.

Its proximity to Wadi Rum and Petra, as well as neighboring Arab countries such as Egypt, Saudi Arabia and Palestine, also makes it among the most sought after destinations in Jordan, he added.

According to Majali, 96 cruise ships carrying a varying number of tourists have arrived in Aqaba during 2022, which is a strong indication that the local tourism sector is recovering.
