The Indonesian Ministry of Health Saturday announced the registration of the first case of monkeypox for a 27-year-old man who was returning from abroad.

Indonesian Health Ministry spokesman Muhammad Siahril said the patient "has great awareness and knowledge of the disease."

He explained, "So when he showed symptoms, he immediately resorted to the doctor. The result came back positive during the day," noting that the patient is currently isolated in the capital, Jakarta.

On July 23, the World Health Organization declared the highest level of alert for monkeypox.

The first symptoms of the disease are high fever, muscle aches, swollen lymph nodes, and a rash that looks like chickenpox.

The patient arrived in Indonesia on August 8 and developed a fever and rash a week later.
