The European Asylum Agency announced Friday that asylum applications to the 27 countries in the European Union, Switzerland and Norway have rebounded as of November, reaching the highest record set in September 2016.

Afghans and Syrians remain at the forefront of the 71,400 asylum seekers, up nine percent from October, according to the agency, which noted that asylum applications totaled 71,930 in September 2016.

Asylum seekers from Afghanistan, where the Taliban movement seized power in mid-August, remain at the forefront (13,000), followed by Syrians, whose country has been in conflict since 2011 (11,500).

Unaccompanied minors account for nearly half of all Afghans' requests.

Iraqis constitute the third group of asylum seekers (4,300, an increase of 30 percent over the month of October), as a result of the recent influx of refugees from Iraq to Belarus.

The number of Venezuelans (3,300), Pakistanis (2,800) and Colombians (2,500) also rose.

The acceptance rate of applications reached 40 percent in November, compared to 41 percent in September, the highest rate in 19 months.

The largest percentage of beneficiaries are Afghans (92 percent) and then Syrians (91 percent).
