Thursday, the Russian Ministry of Defense announced that a MiG-29 fighter jet crashed in the southern Astrakhan region, killing its pilot.

The ministry said in a statement that the plane crashed Wednesday and was on a routine mission when it crashed over an empty area.

Investigations have been launched to determine the cause of the crash.
