Texas Republican Governor Greg Abbott, a fierce opponent of the mandatory wearing of masks to prevent Covid-19, announced that he underwent a laboratory test, Tuesday, and confirmed that he was infected with the coronavirus, a day after his participation in a public event held indoors.

The governor's office said in a statement that Abbott, who is fully vaccinated, "is being tested daily, and today his result is positive for the first time."

The statement added that Abbott "will be self-isolating at the governor's home and will continue to test every day," noting that the governor is being treated with "Regeneron," a mixture of antibiotics.

He added that the governor "is in good health and is not showing symptoms at the moment, and every person in close contact with the governor has been informed."

The statement reassured that "Texas First Lady Cecilia Abbott's test result was negative."

Greg Abbott strongly opposed the mandatory wearing of masks in Texas, and he also issued a decree preventing any government agency or body that receives public funds from making mandatory vaccination against Covid-19.

Monday evening, Abbott participated in a public event held in a closed place, in which he appeared surrounded by dozens of people, none of whom were wearing a mask.
