Peak of third COVID-19 wave will be reached before September: Hijjawi

Monday, a member of the National Committee for Epidemics Bassam Hijjawi expected that the expansion of vaccination against the coronavirus would contribute to flattening the epidemiological curve in Jordan. He said that he expects that the Kingdom will reach the peak of the coronavirus in the beginning of September.

Hijjawi added that the COVID-19 curve has begun to decline, which means the government can continue reopening sectors.

In an interview with Roya’s Donya Ya Donya, Hijjawi said that the government began reopening different sectors June 1, in order to return to a normal life by September.

However, with the gradual reopening of sectors, the return of expatriates and the Eid holiday, all of this led to an increase in the number of coronavirus cases. He stressed that the current week and next week will be decisive in this regard.

Hijjawi also talked about the COVID-19 vaccination campaign in Jordan, saying that its pace is going well, however, it is still not sufficient enough to reach herd immunity.

Regarding the coronavirus deaths in Jordan, he stressed that they are within the normal rates, noting that 99 percent of the deaths in Jordan involve those who did not receive a COVID-19 vaccine.

He lastly pointed out that more than 507,000 people received the coronavirus vaccine during the past week.
