The United Nations General Assembly Friday adopted the 72-year-old former Portuguese politician, Antonio Guterres, as Secretary-General for a new five-year term.

The UN Security Council had expressed its support for Guterres' bid for a second term as Secretary-General.

His second term is scheduled to begin on January 1, 2022.

Guterres, born in 1949, served as the Prime Minister of Portugal from 1995 to 2002, as well as for the presidency of the Socialist International, and also served as the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees from June 2005 until December 2015
