Wednesday, Greece’s fire department announced that three migrants have been found dead following a fire in an abandoned building in the center of Thessaloniki.

Firefighters stated that the three men appeared to have passed away due to inhaling smoke. The three deceased were from Algeria.

Authorities explained that there was a fourth man who survived the incident. He told them that he was from Morocco.

Firefighters said it was not immediately clear what caused the fatal fire.

On a yearly basis, thousands of migrants and refugees seek passage to Greece. Many apply for asylum, while others attempt to make their way further north to other European countries via smugglers. Many end up sleeping outdoors or squatting in abandoned buildings.
