The United States has been swept with a cold wave this week that has killed 10 people and deprived millions of residents of electricity, including in southern states such as Texas, where temperatures are usually moderate.

The National Weather Service has warned of "unprecedented, all-inclusive winter weather" from the East Coast to the West Coast as more than 150 million Americans are subject to winter weather warnings.

With the arrival of a new storm in the Great Lakes region, New York Governor Andrew Cuomo ordered the emergency services on Monday to prepare and expected "snow, ice and strong winds across the state within the next two days."

For days, the United States has been witnessing freezing rain, snowfall and snowstorms.

While ten deaths were attributed to bad weather, the authorities urged residents to be careful when moving in these dangerous conditions.

"We haven't survived the pandemic for nearly a year to lose people in a snowstorm or ice," said Kentucky Governor Andrew Becher.

Last Thursday, a massive road accident caused by snow on a highway near Dallas killed at least six people and injured dozens.

Louisiana authorities confirmed the death of a man Monday in Lafayette, in the first death linked to bad weather in this southern state.

A man died in a car accident due to snow in Kentucky, according to CBS.

And in Tennessee, a young boy died after falling into a frozen pond, local media reported, citing police.

An elderly man also died in Texas, bringing the number of deaths from the cold wave to ten.

And particularly southern states such as Texas, which usually record high temperatures, are affected by this historic cold wave.

Thick snow covered streets, trees and cars in Austin, the state capital. And some areas of the state witnessed a drop in temperatures to below 18 below zero over the weekend, while the temperature in Houston, for example, reached nine below zero Monday.

And residents of the state's cities find themselves forced to stay in their homes, while children cannot go out because they do not have appropriate clothes in a state with a hot climate and average temperatures are usually 20 degrees Celsius.

Monday, electricity was cut off from 2.8 million homes in Texas due to snowfall and the imposition of measures aimed at avoiding increased pressure on the network, according to the "Power Outdge USA" website.

The harsh weather conditions are expected to extend to the far south, with the Meteorological Authority warning that severe thunderstorms and heavy rains are expected.

Texas declared a state of emergency for climate reasons in its 254 counties, endorsed by President Joe Biden on Sunday evening.

-Record low temperatures-

In addition to Texas, at least six states - Alabama, Oregon, Oklahoma, Kansas, Kentucky and Mississippi - have issued a climate emergency. More than 3,000 flights were canceled throughout the country, according to the "FlightAware" website.

"More than 150 million Americans live in a place where warnings of frost or freezing rain have been issued and preparedness plans have been put in place for snowstorms," the National Weather Service said.

"The reason for the sudden cold wave that struck the continental United States is due to a combination of an anti-polar hurricane carrying freezing temperatures and an active low with rain waves," the agency said.

"A record drop in temperatures has been recorded several times, levels that will be surpassed during this polar frost wave," she added.

In the center of the country, temperatures have already reached record levels over the weekend with minus 45 degrees Celsius in some areas of Minnesota, one of the coldest US states.

It is feared that temperatures will drop to far below their seasonal levels in the center of the country and in the plain areas to the south until Tuesday, as the Meteorological Authority warned.
