More than 1,000 cases of the mutated COVID-19 strain have been confirmed in Jordan so far, the Assistant Secretary-General for Primary Health Care at the Ministry of Health Ghazi Sharkas told Roya Friday.

He added that Jordan has witnessed an increase in the number of coronavirus infections this week in comparison to the previous week, noting that the new mutated strain may increase the number of infections due to its rapid spread.

However, Sharkas said the number of COVID-19 infections recorded in schools is not alarming, stressing that they might have contracted the virus from outside the school.

Lastly, he talked about the COVID-19 vaccines, saying that new doses of the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine are set to arrive in Jordan in mid-February.

On Dec. 27, Jordan confirmed the first two cases of the new COVID-19 strain. The new cases were recorded among people who returned to the Kingdom from the UK.
