Mexico approved the Russian Sputnik V vaccine for emergency use, after signing an agreement with the Russian authorities, Deputy Health Minister Hugo Lopez-Gatell said Tuesday.

He added that once the license was issued, Russia confirmed that it will send 400,000 doses of the vaccine within the next few days.

Jan. 25, Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador announced, after a phone call with his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin, that Mexico had agreed to buy 24 million doses of Sputnik V.

Previously, Russia announced that the efficacy of the Sputnik V vaccine is 91.4 percent.

Sputnik V is the third COVID-19 vaccine to be approved in Mexico, after the Pfizer-BioNTech and AstraZeneca-Oxford vaccines.
