COVID-19 infections and deaths rise in Eastern Mediterranean

Indicators of new coronavirus infections and deaths have increased on a daily basis in the Eastern Mediterranean during the past five days, said the World Health Organization(WHO).

"As of September 27, the number of cases of COVID-19 in the Eastern Mediterranean Region increased by 5%, and deaths in the region increased by 4%,” said the WHO office in the Eastern Mediterranean region, which tracks developments in the pandemic in 19 Arab countries in addition to Afghanistan, Iran and Pakistan.

The COVID-19 infections in the Eastern Mediterranean region reached 2,443,770 cases, including 62,723 deaths and 2104,486 recovery cases, according to data of the WHO office.

Since January 2020, the world has been facing a crisis caused by the outbreak of coronavirus which began to spread from the Chinese city of Wuhan and led to huge losses in many sectors of the economy, especially transport, tourism and entertainment, the collapse of global stock exchanges and the acceleration of the decline in energy markets.

The WHO classified this outbreak as a pandemic on March 11, 2020, and the virus has so far infected about 34 million people around the world and killed more than one million of them.
