Fatal errors and the absence of comprehensive planning, as well as water drainage systems that are unprepared to accommodate large amounts of rainfall, are among the most prominent causes of the flooding of Downtown.

Head of the Jordanian Geologists Association, Sakher Nsour, revealed that the Greater Amman Municipality (GAM) building itself is located on the course of a watershed, which hinders and obstructs the course of rainwater.

MP Khalil Attia said that the GAM is responsible for the flooding of Downtown, adding that the main drain pipes in Quraysh Street and Saqf al Seil were blocked with mud due to the GAM’s lack of maintenance.

In the same context, Murad Al-Kalaldeh, a consultant for urban planning, said that the comprehensive plans which were developed in successive decades did not solve the problem in Downtown Amman, but actually added more problems.

Al-Kalaldeh said that the inhabitants of Amman have been living for thousands of years on the banks of the Amman Seil; and like all other cities and communities that live by rivers, the water was used for agriculture and everyday use. The floods were a source of life, but today, unfortunately, has become a source of death and loss.
