Saudi authorities summoned the Jordanian businessman on Tuesday to investigate charges of corruption through the anti-corruption committee that was recently formed in the Kingdom.

As one of the most influential businessmen and the chairman of the largest Jordanian lender Arab Bank, he was detained for questioning after a business trip to Riyadh on Tuesday, family sources said.

He has Saudi citizenship with Palestinian origin, and he was detained hours before he was planning to leave off to Jordan, after he chaired meetings of companies he owns in Saudi Arabia.

He "was heading to the airport and they told him to stay where you are and they picked him up,” sources said.

He canceled a dinner in Amman on Wednesday after he had invited board members of Arab Bank and business associates to attend when he returns.

Also, confidants said that the detained bussinesman had been warned not to go to the Saudi capital after mass arrests of Saudi royals in early November.

“He has been answering questions about his business and partners.”

While reasons for his detention were not clear yet but sources said that he might have been used to put pressure on Jordan’s King not to attend a Muslim summit last week to discuss Trump’s Jerusalem decision.

However, King Abdullah II had attended the Istanbul summit, as the custodian of Muslim holy sites in Jerusalem and is vocal in criticizing Trump over his decision on Jerusalem.

The 80-year-old Chairman of Arab Bank and founder of Zara Investment Holding comes from a family considered as one of the wealthiest families in Palestine, collected a fortune from partnering with influential Saudi businessmen in a major business to supply troops during the military operation to retake Kuwait from Iraq in the 1991 Gulf War.

Saudi authorities reportedly began to investigate the businessman who has many investments inside and outside the country.

And sources’ information indicated that he is in the Ritz Carlton, the same hotel where other Saudi officials are being held.

The Saudi authorities on November 4th began a campaign of arrests of multiple princes and businessmen in Saudi Arabia, under the direct orders of Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, following accusations of corruption.

After King Salman bin Abdulaziz established a committee to fight corruption in the kingdom, presided by his son the Crown Prince.

It appears that the number of detainees has been increasing since, while observers believe that other names might join for the list of detainees in the coming period.
