The United States on Friday vetoed a UN Security Council resolution that would have called for an immediate ceasefire in the ongoing aggression against Gaza. 

The United States' deputy representative at the UN, Robert Wood, said the resolution was "divorced from reality" and "would have not moved the needle forward on the ground," as reported by AFP.

The draft resolution, proposed by the United Arab Emirates (UAE), garnered support from thirteen Security Council members, while Britain chose to abstain.

The vote followed a rare warning from UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres earlier in the week, highlighting a global threat posed by the two-month-long war.

Wood said that the issue is not about isolation but about the belief that a ceasefire would primarily benefit Hamas.

The US stance favors temporary pauses in fighting to protect civilians and secure the release of captives taken by Hamas on Oct. 7.

The goal is to secure the release of additional captives from Gaza and press the Israeli Occupation to enhance civilian protection in Gaza.

This came after 63 days of Israeli Occupation agression on the Gaza Strip that has resulted in more than 17,000 martyrs.
