The movie "Barbie," which had been screened at select cinemas in Algeria for several weeks, has been prohibited by the country, as reported by an official source and the local news outlet 24H Algerie on Monday.

According to the official source, the film is being banned due to its portrayal of "homosexuality and other Western deviations," which are deemed inconsistent with Algeria's religious and cultural values.

Featuring Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling in the roles of Barbie and Ken, the movie takes Mattel Inc's iconic doll on an exciting journey into the real world. Since its premiere on July 21, the film has achieved over USD 1 billion in global box office revenue.

Additionally, Kuwait has also banned the movie.

The supervision of cinema content and the authority to halt screenings lie within the purview of Algeria's Culture Ministry.
