Russian President Vladimir Putin made a visit to the city of Derbent in Dagestan, Russia, on Wednesday to address the development of tourism in the North Caucasus region. The visit coincided with the celebration of Eid al-Adha by Russian Muslims.

During his visit, Putin extended his congratulations to the Russian Muslim community on the occasion of Eid al-Adha. He emphasized the significant role played by the Muslim community in promoting peace, fostering harmony between different races and religions, and upholding family values in Russia.

Derbent, situated on the western coast of the Caspian Sea near the mouth of the Samur River, holds historical importance as one of the oldest cities in the world. Records indicate that it dates back to the fourth millennium BC, making it over 5000 years old. The city, established in its present form in 438 during the Sasanian dynasty, features a 40 km long wall known as the Naryn Fortress, strategically located to close off the passage between the sea and the surrounding mountain range. It is located approximately 121 km from the capital of Dagestan, Makhachkala, and around 2212 km from Moscow, the Russian capital.
