Similar to families leaving out candy without supervision for trick-or-treaters on Halloween, a new kiosk at a Canada airport is relying on the honesty of customers who buy their food.

The Jordanian entrepreneur Najib Faris and his Italian partner Francesco Stara opened a shop at the Halifax Stanfield International Airport that has no staff running it, just a credit card reader and box for customers to place cash when making a purchase.

Najib and Francesco decided to open Mabata Honesty Shop, which serves sandwiches, snacks, cookies, pastries, kombucha, and other items, according to CBC.

Customers are allowed to pick the food, snack and drink they wish to purchase, punch in their order using a touch screen, and pay via a self-service checkout, without anyone watching. A sign at the kiosk fittingly reads, #BEHONEST.

"We took a leap of faith and invested our trust in people," said CEO of the Shop, Najib Faris.

The pair said, "So far the shop has reported no thefts or incidents since it opened on July 10. Customers have also left thank you notes and even a gift card."

When asked if there's a camera or monitoring system, Najib's reply was an emphatic "no."

"It's that level of honesty that we're so, so humbled and proud to see in this city," said Najib.

Najib said they will plan to expand the project to schools, hospitals, and shopping centers, depending on the success of their shop.

The kiosk at the airport is not the only example of a so-called "honesty shop."

Najib said he has heard of a grocery store in Japan, a bottled-water kiosk in Dublin and an art shop in Toronto's Museum of Contemporary Art that also operate on the honesty system, as well as cafés that sell self-serve coffee on the honour system.
