The Jordanian International Rescue Team, affiliated with the Public Security Directorate (PSD), continues its efforts in Libya to provide relief to the affected and conduct search and rescue operations for those stranded due to the floods and torrents that have hit the city of Derna.

The death toll in Derna has risen to over 11,300, according to the Libyan Red Crescent.

Saturday, the International Red Cross reported that there are more than 10,000 missing persons in Derna.

A powerful storm struck the eastern region of Libya last Sunday, and heavy rains led to the collapse of two dams in Derna, causing floodwaters to rush strongly through what is usually a dry riverbed.

The floods swept away large parts of the city, including its infrastructure and buildings. The floodwaters rose several meters, leading to the destruction of bridges connecting the eastern and western parts of the city.

Derna was home to approximately 100,000 residents, and due to the difficulty of access, disrupted communications, and the general chaos in Libya, estimates regarding the number of victims vary.
