Ahmed Hassan Al-Zoubi, the owner of the Sawaleif website operating since 2008, announced his decision to shut down the website's social media accounts if the Cybercrime draft law is enacted.

Additionally, Zoubi stated that he will deactivate his personal accounts if the draft law receives approval. He called for the withdrawal of specific articles in the Cybercrime Law that pertain to journalistic work and public freedoms, asserting that they pose a threat to the media's role.

Zoubi expressed that no press materials would be published on the website's social media and considered shutting down the website by year-end. He asserted his refusal to limit the media's role to only government-related news and vowed not to engage with social media posts via his private accounts.

Predicting that the draft law would force citizens into "secret political action," he believed it could hinder modernizing the political and economic system through organized partisan action. Zoubi pointed out that citizens share their thoughts and concerns on public issues via social media.

Regarding webpage admins being held responsible for comments posted by others, Zoubi questioned how could anyone control comments effectively.

Thursday, the Lower House of Parliament approved the 2023 Cybercrime draft law, forwarding it to the Senate for discussion.

Prime Minister Bisher Al-Khasawneh defended the law, asserting it should not clash with constitutional freedoms and aims to safeguard the rights of all Jordanians, particularly freedom of expression.

MP Adnan Mashuqa, however, expressed concerns, citing potential threats to Jordan's journalistic freedom reputation. Mashuqa argued that the law contradicts modernization efforts in the political system and called on the government to reconsider its stance to prevent potential crises.
