The Rincon de la Vieja volcano in northern Costa Rica registers a "powerful" eruption.
No one was injured and no infrastructure was damaged, according to Costa Rican authorities.
Cyrill Muller, volcanologist of Universidad Nacional de Costa Rica (UNA) said: "Today at 14H34 the volcano Rincon de la Vieja had a powerful eruption. The plume of water steam and volcanic material reached a height of 3000 metres above the crater. It generated lahars on the north side. The lahars are a mixture of mud and hot water which come out from the lake (inside the crater) when an eruption occurs."
"There is probably a small intrusion of magma and volcanic ridges below the crater. Also, gas shows that it is becoming a more magmatic gas than previously. This informs us that activity will continue. It may continue a bit stronger, but it seems that it is not going to calm down any time soon," he explained.
