The Israeli Occupation Court of Appeal has overturned a ruling by a district court judge that had angered Palestinians by questioning the legality of preventing Jews from praying in the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound.

According to Reuters, in light of the decades-old status quo, Jews are only allowed to visit Al Aqsa but are not allowed to pray there.

The government filed an appeal on Wednesday, before the Supreme Court of Jerusalem, which upheld the ban.

"The special sensitivity of the Temple Mount cannot be overstated," Judge Aynat Avman Mueller said in her ruling, using the Hebrew name for the Al-Aqsa Mosque site.

She added that the right to freedom of Jewish worship there "is not absolute and must be replaced by other interests, including the maintenance of public order."

"It is strange and unfortunate that in the 21st century, in a Jewish and democratic country, the basic human rights of Jews will be severely affected," the defendants' lawyer, Nati Rom, told Reuters ahead of Wednesday's verdict.

The number of Jews’ visits to the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound increased, including during the month of Ramadan this year, which coincided with the Jewish Passover, which angered the Palestinians.
