As battles intensified between Ukrainian and Russian troops in the Ukrainian capital Kyiv, the United States along with a handful of EU countries announced Saturday that they will provide the Ukrainian forces with military supplies and fuel in hopes to repel Russia’s military operations.

This comes after the US and EU countries declared sanctions on Russia to halt what is described as an invasion, mainly, restricting Russia’s access to the SWIFT international payment systems.

Europe’s largest economy, Germany, announced Thursday that it will halt the Nord Stream 2 pipeline which delivers natural gas from Russia to Germany.

The military aid to Ukraine included countries like Germany, the Netherlands, and Belgium.

Germany announced Saturday that it will send 1,000 anti-tank grenade launchers and 500 surface-to-air Stinger missiles.

This unprecedented decision marks a turning point in Germany’s longstanding policy of banning the export of weapons to conflict zones.

The Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky welcomed Germany’s decision.

He wrote on Twitter, “Germany has just announced the provision of anti-tank grenade launchers and Stinger missiles to Ukraine. Keep it up, Chancellor Olaf Scholz!”

Germany has previously sent 5,000 military-style helmets to the Ukrainian Armed Forces, the decision was met with harsh criticism and mockery, as the Mayor of Kyiv Vitali Klitschko described the move as a joke.

The Dutch Defense Ministry declared that it will be sending 50 Panzerfaust-3 anti-tank missiles along with 400 rockets.

On the other hand, Belgium announced Saturday that it will aid the Ukrainian military with 2,000 machine guns and 3,800 tons of fuel.

The US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken said Saturday that the United States will send USD 350 million in military equipment.
