Saturday, a remote Afghan community held a funeral for the boy who died after being trapped for three days in a well.

Taliban officials announced the death of five-year-old Haider, who has been stuck in a deep, dry well in southeastern Afghanistan since Tuesday.

Rescue personnel arrived at the child Haidar, on Friday morning, after continuous work throughout the night to try to reach him, as the rugged, rocky ground impeded their progress, according to what a police source said.

The Afghan child, Haider, fell on Tuesday at the bottom of this earthen well in the village of Shukak in the province of Zabul, 400 km southwest of the capital, Kabul.

The accident is reminiscent of what happened in early February in Morocco, where the child Rayan, 5, fell to the bottom of a dry well and was found dead after five days of hard efforts by the rescue teams, in an incident that aroused great sympathy in Morocco and the world.

"The rescue operation continued throughout the night," Zabul police spokesman Zabihullah Jawhar told AFP.

"The rescue team ran into a new obstacle, a rock that prevented it from digging deeper. We are afraid that dust will fall on the boy and we will likely lose him, so we are working with caution," he added.

Haider's grandfather, Hajj Abdul Hadi, 50, told AFP that the child fell into the hole while trying to "help" adults dig a new well in this drought-stricken village.

Official sources said that the child slipped into this well, which is 25 meters deep, and then was pulled by a rope to a depth of about ten meters, where he was suspended.

Emissaries from the Taliban government are supervising relief operations in front of hundreds of local residents.

Taliban officials published videos of relief operations praising the efforts of the new regime, which is facing sharp criticism for violating human rights, in taking care of every citizen in the country.

"The child is currently alive," government spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid said in a video message he sent to the media. He added that the rescuers use axes as they approach the child's place so as not to cause great vibrations to the ground.

Videos posted Thursday on social media showed the boy, in a blue jacket, stuck in a sitting position in a well with his shoulders against the wall and clearly able to move his arms and upper body.

Excavators opened a large sloping trench in the ground to try to reach the place where the child was stuck.
