The Department of Health and Social Care in the United Kingdom announced Sunday, that the country recorded 85 new deaths in the past 24 hours resulting from COVID-19, bringing the total number of deaths since the beginning of the pandemic to 155,698 deaths.

Additionally, 62,399 new coronavirus cases were recorded, bringing the total number to 16,468,522.

These are the lowest numbers the UK has recorded since Dec. 14.

The data also does not include the deaths and cases figures for Northern Ireland as they were not provided in time.

Many restrictions in the UK were lifted a few days ago after the positive cases fell from record levels.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson had said restrictions could be lifted due to "the success of our booster rollout, the tireless work of the NHS and the amazing public response."

But he urged more people to get vaccinated and warned: "The pandemic is not over. Everyone should remain cautious."

The government announced a return to ‘Plan A’ after rules introduced under ‘Plan B’ were eased. The Plan B rules included face masks that were required in all enclosed spaces and people were told to work remotely.
People also had to provide vaccine documentation in order to be allowed entry to places such as nightclubs, football grounds and large-scale events.
