Thursday, an earthquake hit the Japanese capital, Tokyo, and surrounding areas causing buildings to shake, reported Japan's public broadcaster NHK.

The Japan Meteorological Agency said the quake measured 6.1 on the Richter scale, but no tsunami warning was issued.

Preliminary information issued by the Meteorological Agency said that the epicenter of the earthquake was located in Chiba Prefecture, east of Tokyo, adding that it occurred at 22:41 local time (1341 GMT) at a depth of 80 kilometers.

There were no immediate reports of injuries or damage.
