Wednesday, New Zealand lifted many COVID-19 restrictions as the number of cases continues to decline in the country.

The total number of recorded cases stands at 3,829 since the beginning of the pandemic, with 16 new cases recorded Tuesday.

Aug. 18, harsh restrictions were imposed upon discovery of the first case in six months, with all schools and non-essential businesses closed.

Monday, PM Jacinda Ardern said restrictions will be lifted in most of the country.

However, Auckland, the largest city in New Zealand will remain under lockdown as the new Delta variant continues to spread. A review of the restrictions is scheduled for Sept. 13.

The strict measures put forth by the government in the early days of the pandemic, led to just 27 deaths among five million citizens.
