Lebanese President Michel Aoun Friday expressed his absolute willingness to testify in the case of the Beirut Port explosion in the event that the judicial investigator decides to listen to him pursuant to Article 85 of the Code of Criminal Procedure, according to what the Presidency Information Office announced in a statement.

The statement added that "Aoun informed the situation to the Public Prosecutor at the Court of Cassation, Judge Ghassan Oweidat, in his meeting with him today, noting that Aoun stressed the need to achieve full justice in the crime of the Beirut port explosion."

Aoun's position came in the midst of a major constitutional and political controversy in Lebanon, after the judicial investigator in the port crime, Judge Tariq Al-Bitar, summoned some former officials.

The "Future Movement" headed by Saad Hariri has proposed a law to temporarily suspend articles in the Lebanese constitution that give the president absolute immunity under Article 60 of the constitution and also give MPs parliamentary immunity. The Future Movement is currently collecting the necessary parliamentary signatures to submit the proposal to the Parliament for consideration and decision.
