The Chinese authorities announced Thursday that the death toll from the floods that hit the central province of Henan last week has risen to 99.

An official in Zhengzhou, the capital of Henan Province, also announced 26 more deaths in two remote areas, including 18 in the southwest in Xinmi and 8 in the west in Xinjiang.

Zhengzhou was hit by a storm and a record rain fell nine days ago, and flood waters inundated the city's subway system, killing 14 people, and turning the city's streets into rushing rivers that washed away vehicles.

The water has receded in some areas, but others are still submerged, while relief and debris removal efforts are still ongoing, while economic losses were estimated at 91 billion yuan ($14.1 billion).
