Dr. Bassam Hijjawi, a member of the National Epidemiological Committee, said that the Delta mutant is now the most prevalent mutant in most countries of the world, as it can infect 5-7 unvaccinated people.

Hijjawi added in a statement to Roya that the Delta mutant is the most prevalent now in Jordan, and it may be the reason for the increase in the number of cases. However, he stressed that the epidemiological situation in Jordan is still stable despite the slight increase that the Kingdom witnessed in the past days, as the percentage of positive tests is still less than 5 percent, which is the safe percentage according to international protocols.

Hijjawi indicated that the goal now is to vaccinate 4.5 million Jordanian citizens with the first dose of the vaccine by September, which represents 70 percent of the target group.

He indicated to Roya that receiving the third dose of the vaccine is possible, but that depends on several things, the most important of which is the availability of vaccines, in addition to measuring the proportion of societal immunity, and the lack of continuity of immunity generated by the first dose.

Regarding the third wave, Hijjawi told Roya that the spread of the third wave depends on the speed of receiving vaccinations, but even if the third wave of corona spreads, it will not be at the same height as the first and second waves, due to a large amount of the population having been vaccinated.
