COVID-19 around the world: Russia sees new record death toll, Iran fears new wave

Here are the latest developments related to the spread of the coronavirus in the world.

- Russia: new record death toll -

Saturday, Russia recorded 697 deaths from the coronavirus within a 24-hour period, in a record daily toll for the fifth consecutive day due to the outbreak of the Delta mutant.

The number of new infections reached 24,439, which is the highest number since the second closure was lifted in mid-January.

- Tighter restrictions in Indonesia -

More than 50,000 police and soldiers have deployed to impose new measures aimed at containing the outbreak of the coronavirus in Indonesia, which is experiencing an unprecedented surge in Covid-19 infections.

In the capital, Jakarta, located on the island of Java, a partial closure was imposed, as well as on the island of Bali.

Indonesia, which is the fourth largest country in the world in terms of population, witnessed an increase in the number of daily injuries, which doubled four times in less than a month. Saturday, it recorded a record 27,913 cases in the past 24 hours and 493 deaths. Friday, 539 deaths were recorded.

The country's health care system is on the verge of collapse, with hospitals overcrowded and unable to receive more patients, prompting patients' families to seek to secure oxygen tanks to treat the injured and dying in their homes.

- Iran fears a fifth wave-

Saturday, Iranian President Hassan Rouhani expressed his fear that the country would enter a fifth pandemic wave of the coronavirus, due to the spread of the highly contagious Delta mutant.

Iran is the country in the Middle East most affected by the pandemic in terms of raw numbers, and has announced the death of more than 84,000 people out of more than 3.2 million people infected with the disease. Officials have previously acknowledged that these official numbers remain below the actual.

- Objecting to the mandatory vaccination of health personnel in Italy -

300 health care providers in Italy have filed a lawsuit to scrap the requirement for medical and health workers to be vaccinated against COVID-19.

- Nearly four million deaths -

The Coronavirus has killed 3,964,799 people in the world since the World Health Organization office in China reported the emergence of the disease at the end of December 2019, according to a census conducted by Agence France-Presse based on official sources on Saturday afternoon.

The United States is the most affected country in terms of raw number of deaths (605,304), followed by Brazil with 521,952 deaths, then India with 401,050 deaths, Mexico with 233,425 deaths, and Peru with 192,902 deaths.

The numbers are based on daily reports issued by health authorities in each country and exclude subsequent reviews by statistical agencies that indicate much higher death numbers.

The World Health Organization, taking into account the excess mortality rate directly or indirectly related to Covid-19, considers that the outcome of the epidemic may be two or three times greater than the officially announced outcome.
