Thursday night, eight people were killed and at least 60 others were injured in a mass shooting at a FedEx facility near Indianapolis International Airport in the US city of Indianapolis, announced the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department spokeswoman Genae Cook.

Cook said in a media briefing Friday that several of the injured have been taken to hospitals.

The gunman is reported to have killed himself.

There is "no active threat to the community at this time," Cook said. However, she said that it is still unclear what motivated the shooting, but investigations are ongoing.

According to Cook, police arrived at the scene at around 11:00pm local time, to an active-shooter situation and entered the facility without hesitation.

"The officers responded, they came in, they went in and they did their job," Cook said.

In turn, FedEx said in a statement "Safety is our top priority, and our thoughts are with all those who are affected. We are working to gather more information and are cooperating with investigating authorities."
