French President Emmanuel Macron will address the French at eight o'clock in the evening Wednesday, as announced by the Elysee Palace, as the country faces a third wave of the COVID-19 pandemic.

This comes after a meeting of the Defense Council in the morning to discuss the health crisis that prompted the authorities to impose closure measures in 19 regions, including Paris.

A curfew will also be in effect in the country from 7pm, while restaurants, cinemas and shopping centers are closed.

Macron has faced criticism from opposition parties and some health experts for his refusal to impose a nationwide lockdown at an earlier time.

Many expect a decision to close schools in the areas most affected by the pandemic.
