The handling of Marwan Barghouti's case, a notable Palestinian political figure imprisoned by Israeli Occupation authorities, has drawn rare concern from the United States, as reported by The Washington Post.

Governments in the Middle East have voiced similar concern.

Marwan Barghouti, a prominent member of Fatah and a significant Palestinian political figure, has been imprisoned since 2002.

- Physical and Psychological Assault -

Allegations from Barghouti's family and others suggest he has suffered physical and psychological mistreatment since Hamas attacks in October.

His son, Arab Barghouti, told The Washington Post that Marwan Barghouti faced physical assaults and solitary confinement after Hamas attacks on October 7.

He also reported being subjected to the Israeli Occupation national anthem played at “at a very high volume, from around 5 AM until midnight, for many days.”

A lawyer who met Barghouti documented bruising on his body, and Barghouti said he was beaten until losing consciousness.

“I was beaten for long minutes all over my body, mainly on the face, back, and legs. The severity of the beating caused me to collapse to the ground, at which point they persisted in striking me until I lost consciousness,” read the lawyer's written report to the Barghouti family.

Israeli Occupation Prison Service reportedly denied these claims, stating they are unaware of such incidents, claiming that the Prison Service “is a law-abiding organization. We have no knowledge of these claims.”

- Multiple Life Sentences -

Barghouti, serving multiple life sentences, is seen as a potential successor to Palestinian Authority leader Mahmoud Abbas.

In a rare move, US officials have urged Israeli Occupation to investigate claims of abuse, according to The Washington Post.

Israeli Occupation restrictions on visits to Palestinian prisoners, including Barghouti, have drawn criticism from international organizations and rights groups.

Politicians like Sen. Chris Van Hollen emphasized the need for the US to address Barghouti's treatment with Israeli Occupation, given his significant influence among Palestinians.
