Saturday, a royal statement confirmed the death of the child Rayan soon after his removal from the well.

His condition was unknown until an official statement confirmed his death.

According to Moroccan media outlets, a regional hospital in Tetouan has been prepped for the transfer. An ambulance and a helicopter were on standby at the scene.

The excavation operation to rescue Rayan had reached a "very delicate" stage earlier Saturday, an official said.

The rescue teams who were trying to retrieve the child Rayan returned to digging vertically in an attempt to reach him.

Last Tuesday, the five-year-old Rayan fell into the deep well, in the village of Agran in the Chefchaouen province, in northern Morocco.

The difficulty of the rescue operation came due to the narrowness of the well.

Following the incident, the hashtag '#SaveRayan' topped the list of trending hashtags on Twitter in Jordan and around the world.
