New York police reported three injuries, which are non-life threatening, after an explosion hits near the Port Authority Bus Terminal in Manhattan on Monday morning.

The suspect was identified as Akayed Ullah, 27-year-old, from Bangaldesh. He was holding a home-made bomb, which is strapped to his body to set off an explosion at one of the busiest commuter hubs at rush hour in the city.

He was injured with three others, according to New York's Mayor Bill de Blasio, who described the incident as "an attempted terrorist attack".

The bus terminal was temporarily shut down and a large swath of midtown Manhattan was closed to traffic but subway train service returned to normal after earlier disruptions.
