A senior Indian government official stated that all 40,000 Rohingya muslims are illegal immigrants - even those officially registered with the UN High Commissioner for Refugees.

In a statement by a representative of Modi’s nationalist government, all Rohingya will be deported from the country despite the UNHCR’s statement than no official signatory accord was made to prevent them from registering.

General notions of unrest are present with India, exacerbated under Modi’s right-wing government. Some civilians took to the streets protesting the presence of Rohingya refugees, with government officials stating they are in talks with the governments of Bangladesh and Myanmar discussing a deportation plan.

An estimated one million Rohingya muslims live in the Rakhine state in northwest of Myanmar, but are denied citizenship despite living in the region for centuries.

With the onset of government crackdowns, many are escaping persecution by fleeing to nearby Bangladesh, areas bordering Thailand, Pakistan or crossing dangerous waters into Southeast Asia.

Ongoing military crackdowns by Myanmar’s police and armed forces are internationally condemned by the United Nations, which cites possible crimes against humanity. Amnesty International, and the U.S. State Department also criticize the Burmese military for wide-scale human rights violations, extrajudicial killings, gang rapes, arson, and infanticides.

Some reports from CNN even cited the crisis as full-blown genocide.
