  • Paris mayor seeks honorary citizenship for Palestinians in Gaza, West Bank and journalists.

Paris Mayor Emmanuel Grégoire has announced plans to propose granting honorary citizenship of the French capital to Palestinian civilians in Gaza and the occupied West Bank, as well as Palestinian journalists, in a move he described as “an act for peace.”

The proposal is expected to be presented for a vote before the Paris City Council during its June session, according to remarks Grégoire made in an interview with French magazine Le Nouvel Obs.

Grégoire said the initiative comes amid what he described as a catastrophic humanitarian situation in Gaza and reflects Paris’s longstanding commitment to defending human dignity and the freedom of peoples.

The proposal is expected to receive backing from left-wing parties on the council, including the Greens and other progressive groups. The announcement followed a visit by the Palestinian ambassador to France to Paris City Hall.

The mayor said the move was also intended as a response to the ongoing war in Gaza and what he described as repeated provocations by 'Israeli' National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir.

Honorary citizenship granted by Paris is largely symbolic and is intended to express solidarity with individuals or groups facing hardship or injustice.
