The French Presidency of the United Nations Security Council announced the convening of an emergency session on Thursday afternoon, following Moscow's request, as reported by AFP.

Moscow accused Ukraine of downing and destroying a Russian military transport plane in a border area between the two countries.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, currently visiting New York, requested the session to be held on Wednesday, but it will take place Thursday afternoon.

The plane incident resulted in the death of all passengers, including 65 Ukrainian prisoners of war whom Moscow was transporting for the purpose of exchange, Ukrainian media reported.

In response, the Ukrainian Intelligence Agency announced that it does not have "reliable information about the identities of the individuals on board the plane that Moscow claims was carrying dozens of Ukrainian prisoners."

The Ukrainian Intelligence statement indicated that "there was supposed to be a prisoner exchange operation, but it did not take place. According to the Russian side, this was the result of the downing of a Russian plane, model IL-76, suspected to be carrying our prisoners."
