The Chairman of the Armed Services Committee in the United States’ House of Representatives, Rep. Mike Rogers, has formally requested US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin to testify before the committee for failing to disclose his recent hospitalization to President Joe Biden and the Department of Defense.

Austin had been admitted to the hospital for treatment of prostate cancer since late 2023, and did not inform President Biden about his hospitalization; which has sparked widespread criticism.

Austin spent two weeks in the hospital due to complications from prostate cancer surgery, which he underwent on Dec. 22, 2023. Details of the medical situation were also initially kept confidential. Austin was discharged from the hospital to his home in Virginia last Monday.

In a letter to Austin, Representative Mike Rogers wrote, “congress must understand what happened and who made decisions to prevent the disclosure of the whereabouts of a cabinet secretary."
