Monday, the head of the Jordan Association for Restaurants and Sweets Shops Owners Omar Al-Awwad confirmed that the sector is witnessing a continuous decline due to high costs.

Awwad told Roya that restaurants no longer make a profit after last year's rise in the prices of most basic commodities (20-25 percent), which weakened people's purchasing power.

He added that the private sector lacks partnership with the public sector and, in the rare cases that it happens, the opinion of the association is 'not taken into consideration.'.

Awwad noted that it is not possible to replace expatriate workers from the Jordanian workforce because local workers are 'not qualified' to work in the field.

He called on the government to review and consider their proposal and suggestions regarding workers in the restaurants and bakeries sector, and establishing legislation in the interest of the sector.
